5 weeks online courses

This chapter starts by understanding corporate need for performance measurement and control systems. There will be an introduction to the main organizational tensions that hamper strategy implementation and emphasize the role of performance measurement and control systems to mitigate these tensions. Then, a look at how companies organize and use performance information, which is the basis of management control, and introduce the main performance measurement and control systems as key components of their planning and control process. Finally, the week concludes by illustrating the need for managers to use performance measurement and control systems in different ways: diagnostically and interactively. In particular, we will see how the combination of diagnostic and interactive controls help focus management attention on both internal and external  risk factors - known as strategic uncertainties that can challenge company survival.

This chapter covers in very detail three components of the planning and control cycle, representing three fundamental performance measurement and control systems that managers often used diagnostically to support strategy implementation: • strategic planning    • operational budgeting or profit planning, and• budgetary control, commonly known as variance analysis.

expands the analysis of planning and control cycles by looking at forecasting methods and capital budgeting. In doing it, it explains how managers can support their management planning and control activities by making more accurate predictions, as well as evaluating potential investment projects to allocate financial resources across multiple assets and initiatives effectively.

This chapter begins by completing an analysis of the planning cycle through looking at cash budgeting, its benefits, and its challenges. Then it examines the needs for business leaders to design effective systems for internal reporting, performance measurement, and evaluation. For such systems, we will look at key properties, design elements, uses and main limits associated with relying mainly on financial controls. To overcome the undesired implications of financial controls, it focuses on popular combinations-of-measures systems (such as the Balanced Scorecard) that are intended to allow a more comprehensive monitoring the company's performance. In addition, it explores how combinations-of-measures systems, like the Balanced Scorecard, are suitable tools to integrate social and environmental aspects of business into formal performance measurement and evaluation and facilitate the implementation of sustainability goals. Finally, it familiarizes the participant with management control systems of more recent introduction, like the Landscape Monitor, designed to be used interactively and support managers looking outside the organization, identifying strategic uncertainties, and fostering exploration of new business models.

The final assessment evaluates the content learned in the previous four weeks. The assessment can range from multiple choice quizzes (MCQ) to more open response evaluations, like a case study.
